Life has been kinda busy, so my posts are a bit behind. First there was summer, and traveling. then came fall and school, and traveling. Needless to say the blog got neglected. First I'm going to do a few posts to get caught up on some pictures I should've posted long ago....

My sister just called me and said, "do you have an angled broom?" "yes." I answered "Why?" She replied "take it in your dining room, face it with the longer bristles to the north and stand it up."
I was skeptical. I followed her instructions and sure enough it's standing by itself. How? you ask. Apparently it has something to do with the angle the earth is at right now. It's not supposed to work tomorrow. I'm going to leave it up until it falls by itself just to see how long it works.

I'm back from every where, but i just don't feel like blogging, I've been knitting some socks, and made some stitch markers, making some beaded frogs and in general feeling like not doing anything I should be. we're still struggling with picking out a name for the baby brother. only about a month to go! I have a lot of house cleaning to do!

OK so I updated the shop at thedyeingarts.com/shop on the 11Th but I didn't have pictures for some of the rovings I put up. I hope to get pictures taken tomorrow afternoon while the light is good, hopefully the 2 year old child will cooperate as well. I also hope to get some pictures of the new yarns I got to make baby socks. other than that I've just been traveling a lot. so far I don't have anywhere i have to go in August so I guess I'll get caught up on some stuff then?

It's been a bit hectic around here, a lot has been going on. I got another order for The Loopy ewe, then a few days before memorial day my mother in law passed away. then we had a vacation planned to go to Lilies war(an SCA Event) friends of ours came from England so we wanted to see them. I forgot my camera so hopefully I can get some pictures from someone. We just got back from that and I shipped out the loopy order yesterday. On Saturday we are having a memorial service for my MIL, and then we are traveling out to the east coast to spread the ashes in the ocean.

I have been a really bad blogger lately, sorry. I have some easter pictures I finally put up on flickr. I've been pretty busy with another order from the Loopy Ewe and of course we had to go to Reno for a Tattoo convention while I was trying to get stuff dyed, so now I'm a little behind.
Reno was pretty fun there were some screw-ups with the hotel room(s) but it all got straightened out (with upgrades). Babygurl liked the convention and met a lot of "new friends" as she called them. Pretty much anyone with tattoos was her new friend. She had such a blast going to the big parties (NTA members banquet, award ceremony) and she did really well on the airplanes to and from Reno.

O.K. so here are the easter pictures first:

Easter morning we had an easter egg hunt Grandpa Thom came over to help.

After that Grandpa Bill, Grandma Jane brought Tante K down to spend a few days with us. We went out to dinner with them and then dyed eggs when we got home. After grandma and grandpa left Tante K dyed some yarn with the leftover egg dyes(but I didn't take a picture of it.).

on Mon we went to the Zoo.

Oh yeah then the easter fairy showed up.

We got new swimming suits so we could go swimming in Reno. Unfortunately they were doing construction so the pool was closed.

Well I finally updated the shop with some cultivated silk and merino tencel rovings. I have a couple more yarns done but have yet to take pictures of them. I still feel kinda yucky until about 5 pm-ish and by then all the good picture taking sunlight is gone. On another note I finished the 24lb roving order for the Loopy Ewe and got it sent off on time, it should be up this week sometime. Yay!

Morning sickness (read all day nausia) really sucks and needs to go away! I haven't had the energy to do much of anything. the dishes are piled up and so is the laundry. Babygurl and I went up to Vermillion for an SCA event 2 weekends ago. I got to do some visiting and she got to play with some kids her age.

I got a new respirator, and the dyes (some of them)that I ordered got here last tuesday. On Thursday and Friday I dyed 12 lbs of the 24lb order I have to fill, now I'm still waiting on the rest of the dyes to finish . Hopefully they will be here tomorrow, keep your fingers crossed.

I created a tutorial on how to get your rabbit to like your 2 year old, it's very easy!

Give 2 year old a sliced apple. It gets results.

I need a new respirator....
I'll get into that more in a minute, first I want to show some pictures. I've been trying to get some of these posted since Christmas!

I am a little behind schedule on getting dyeing done so I can put new stuff up in the shop. OK so I don't really have a schedule, but I'm starting to feel guilty that I haven't dyed in a while. first there was christmas traveling, then new years and a new bed for Babygurl, Then back up to visit family. I'm home now but our local yarn store is moving to a new building, and I've been helping pack yarn for the past few days.

Well we survived all of the xmas traveling!
We had a lot of fun while we were gone. Babygurl got lots of toys and books. TH got a craftsman cart for his miniatures stuff, and some DVDs. I got lots of cool stuff including the new Cat Bordhi sock book, Knit picks Harmony dpns, and a new camera. My sister also gave us some great framed pictures of Babygurl.

Now that the madness is (somewhat) over, I'm trying to get the website updated. I also have to set up a shop page for TH on the nuclear ink website. Aaarghh! work stuff ! Before any work stuff gets done though, Babygurl and I have to go buy stuff for her new big gurl bed that we got yesterday.

and yes it was pretty easy. I made a pumpkin pie using condensed goat milk since TH has issues with cow's milk. I did have to condense the milk myself, cause the stuff from the can tasted horrible. I also used a graham cracker crust.

I cant believe it's Thanksgiving tomorrow, then Babygurl's B-day on the third! She's gonna be 2. I have so much stuff to do, cleaning Christmas shopping etc...

I did manage to finish another baby blankie amongst the chaos.

while i was taking pictures/doing laundry, Babygurl got a hold of the camera.

Yesterday TH and I finally had time so he could tattoo me, we're working on my left leg it's pretty much going to be a wildlife scene. He did the turtle before Babygurl was born, and now I have a couple of clown loach fish. I can't really take pic's of it by myself so I'll just have to post them later.

Halloween adventures

For Halloween this year we bought Babygurl an Elizabeth Swan costume, It was very cute on her even though it was a little too big. we put it on when we got it home and she wanted it off after about 15 minutes, so we waited a couple of days and tried again she wouldn't even try it, she screamed and ran away! Soo...we took it back to the store and got an Alice costume instead, she loved it and wouldn't take it off. I had to scramble to make costumes for Tattoo Husband and me. He went as the Mad Hatter and I was the White Rabbit.

Babygurl even helped with the pumpkins she picked out. Sshe did the top one with a sharpie and I did the bottom one, they were both very small so I couldn't carve anything intricate.

It's October and I still have green tomatoes. OCTOBER! and they're still flowering too! I can't believe it. Don't they know they were supposed to be ripe a moth ago so we could eat them all.
silly tomatoes. I guess I'll have to bring them inside to ripen before the frost kills them.

Babygurl decided she wanted to wear daddy's leather jacket while I was at a stitch & bitch on tuesday.

She also likes to ride on the Giant killer bunny with sharp nasty pointy teeth, that TH got me for X-mas last year.

Ok now the stuff I'm working on: the sun blankie, I'm crocheting the edge I did a blanket stitch around, now I'm in the process of doing a single crochet, then I will do a scallop.

The Drunken jaywalker, not much done but I'm into the patterning now. I've kinda put this on the back burner cause I have to get other stuff done for christmas/before babies are born.

The mini socks, 2 left to knit! then I will have all of them done for the christmas ornaments.

Web store update

I have been going insane trying to get my web store up and running. I finally ordered the zen cart book. I figured out most of the product listings and stuff i just have to get them put in, then it will at least be functional. Hopefully by the end of next week. I can make it prettier once I get the book.

Finally settling back into some sort of routine after all of the traveling. Babygurl is still staying up too late (but so am I). My studio is almost organized, I just have a few bins of misc. stuff to sort through, and two bins full of fabric scraps to sort and toss. I still have to clean up my dyeing room a bit though, I have two fleeces in bags in the middle of it. :) While I was at the SD state fair I got a 3rd place rambouillet fleece, and a babydoll fleece for $15 I'm so excited! now I just have to decide if I want to send them out for processing. I finally got the Stste Fair pics uploaded too.

Yay! I'm home again and not sick, just sick of house work and laundry:)
I finally figured out how to put my header on my website, so I spent all day working on that, check it out. hopefully I will get some shop stuff put up , but for now check out my stuff on etsy or the Lime&Violet shop.

Montana

O.K., so I haven't blogged in a while... I have a good excuse though. I went to Montana, then babygurl and I got sick the day before we came home. A fever and chills sure made the 16 hour car trip more fun.Ha Ha! Then she got an ear infection and I got a sinus infection. Yay more fun!
Any way here are some pics from the trip.

Tuesday July 24th was natural dye day, I was going for a nice gold color. The one on the left is marigold, on the right is Osage orange in both pictures. The marigold is going to be a little more work though, if you look closely in the picture below there is a lot of petals in the wool. I should have put them in a mesh bag. Oops!

Wed. the 25th Babygurl and I went to Grandma & Grandpa's, then Up to Great Grandma & Grandpa's on the 29th. Although Babygurl learned how to get out of the crib, and we were pretty busy, we still had fun. I learned a bit of history too. Did you know in 1949 one night in a hotel room was only $4.35?

Anyway, here is Babygurl eating some corn on the cob that we picked, she LOVES corn now.:)

Then we gave the corncobs to the cows. I tried to get a picture of Babygurl climbing the fence but she was just going up and down one bar of it.

This is a project I started on Sunday, I found the flannel at Jo-Ann fabrics in Sioux Falls, SD. Tattoo Husband's apprentice & his wife are expecting a baby girl in October. She will need a cool flannel blankie. It's going to be a welcome to the world present.

I decided to do the picot edging a little more curvey on this blankie. So far I've only got one corner picoted. I did that while I was trying to get babygurl down for a nap on Monday. Now I know it takes an hour and a half (with some put the kid back in the crib breaks.) to crochet one corner of edging.

knitting & tattoos

On Tues. Babygurl decided she needed some tattoos to match mommy and daddy, so she drew some herself. When daddy got home from work she showed him, then gave him a marker and held out her arm for him to do some.

It was crayola washable markers so it came right off.

Do knitting and tattoos go together? The answer is yes.
We left on Wed. evening for Kansas City, MO, for the annual APT's Tattoo Rendezvous . We had fun, while Tattoo Husband was working, Babygurl and I wandered around, went swimming, and visited people. She made quite an impression.

She loved looking at all of the tattooed people, and got to play with some kids about her age, and daddy's cousins. She flirted with all the guys, and chatted with all the women.

I got to meet some pretty cool people, one woman made some cool jewelry. The photographer's wife watched me working on the baby jays and said " now I have to go home and learn to knit." By the end of the convention I had finished the jays, working off and on while Babygurl was napping, and even cast on for the drunken jaywalkers with some Tub o Gin self striping.

I got home from the Tattoo convention in Kansas City, MO at about 3:30pm today, turned the computer on, unloaded the van, got the regular mail. My book came while I was gone. I had ordered The Natural Knitter by Barbara Albright. I set the book aside so I could check my email, then I was going to tell you all about the trip and post pics...........

But I got my Ravelry invite today!!!!!!
I played all day!
So it is now midnight and I haven't even gotten my camera out of the knitting bag to charge, or looked at my new book. I'll have to post stuff tomorrow or wednesday.

Baby Jaywalker Pattern

First of all, I cannot take credit for this pattern the original pattern is written by Grumperina, I only changed some numbers around. Also Thanks to Minnie for helping me with the math.

This pattern is about a size 6 or 7 toddler.

Materials
Cherry Tree Hill Yarn of unknown colorway (the ball band was missing)

US 1 / 2.25mm set of 5 double pointed needles

Darning needle

Size
6 inches around foot and 5.5 inches from top of leg to bottom of heel

Abbreviations
k-f/b: increase 1 stitch by knitting in the front and back loops of the same stitch
ssk: slip slip knit – slip 2 stitches individually as if to knit, then knit them together through the back loop.
dd: double decrease – slip 2 stitches together as if to knit, knit the next stitch, pass the slipped stitches over the knitted stitch
sl1 – slip 1 stitch as if to purl

Leg
Cast on 52 sts. Divide sts. onto 4 needles, 13 sts on each. Join into a round, being careful not to twist sts.

Note: this join is the beginning of all future rounds; it is at the back of the leg. Needles are numbered relative to this join – the first one worked is #1, etc.

Begin ribbing: *k2, p2; repeat from * around. Work established ribbing pattern for 1 inch / 2.5 cm.

Begin zigzag pattern:
Round 1: k every stitch.
Round 2: *k-f/b, 4, dd, k4k-f/b; repeat from * a total of 4 times.
Work zigzag pattern until leg measures 6 3/4 inches / 17 cm (7 inches / 18 cm) or desired length to top of heel. End with round 1.

Heel
Heel flap: k13 sts on needle #1, turn. Sl1, P26, turn. These 27 sts form the heel flap. The remaining 27 sts form the instep and are unused for the moment. Work heel back and forth, turning after every row.
Row 1: *sl1, k1; repeat from *.
Row 2: sl1, p26.
Repeat the last 2 rows 8 more times.

Turn heel:
Row 1: sl1, k14, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: sl1, knit within 1 st of the gap, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 4: sl1, purl to within one st of the gap, p2tog, p1, turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts are worked. There are 16 heel sts.

Heel gussets: sl1, k15 heel sts, pick up and k11 sts along the side of the heel flap. Work 26 instep sts in established pattern (round 2 of zigzag pattern, but repeat from * a total of 2 times). With an empty needle, pick up and k11 sts along the other side of the heel flap, 8 sts from the heel needle. There are 13 sts on needles #2 and #3, 19 sts on needles #1 and #4.
Round 1: Work to 3 sts from end of needle #1, k2tog, k1. Work instep sts in established pattern (round 1 of zigzag pattern). K1, ssk at beginning of needle #4, work to end.
Round 2: Work to 1 st from end of needle #1, sl1. Work instep sts in established pattern (round 2 of zigzag pattern). Sl1 at beginning of needle #4, work to end.

Note: in the heel and foot portions, the instep stitches on needles #2 and #3 are demarcated by slipped stitches at each side to resemble the patterning of the leg portion. The slipped stitches are made every other round on those edges of needles #1 and #4 which border the instep.

Repeat the last 2 rounds until there are 11 sts on needles #1 and #4. There are 26 instep sts and 22 sole stitches, 48 sts total. The difference in the number of instep and sole stitches accounts for the varying tensions of zigzag and stockinette stitch patterns.

Foot
Continue even in established pattern (including the slipped stitches mentioned above) until foot measures 2 inches (5 cm) less than desired finished length. End with round 1 of zigzag pattern.

Toe
Round 1: Work needle #1 even. *K1, ssk at the beginning of needle #2, work to 3 sts from end of needle, k2tog, k1. Repeat from * for needle #3. Work needle #4 even. 44 sts remain.
Round 2: Work needle #1 even. K1, ssk at the beginning of needle #2. Work to 3 sts from end of needle #3, k2tog, k1. Work needle #4 even. 42 sts remain.
Round 3: Work even.
Round 4: Work to 3 sts from end of needle #1, k2tog, k1. K1, ssk at beginning of needle #2. Work to 3 sts from end of needle #3, k2tog, k1. K1, ssk at beginning of needle #4, work to end of needle.
Round 5: Work even.
Repeat the last 2 rounds until there are 4 sts on each needle, 16 stitches total. Work to the end of needle #1. Move the sts on needles #1 and #4 onto one needle, and the other stitches on another needle. Kitchener stitch these sts together.

Finishing
Weave in all ends.

I had another good dye day yesterday, 6 lbs of wool roving, a little bit of ingeo, and some yarn(not pictured, but on my flickr), which means I spent all day today with stuff out on the line and me taking pictures. I updated my filckr site too. there are a lot of new pictures up now, I added a whole page and a half.

I have been working on another Jaywalker sock, but this one is for Babygurl. I'm adapting the pattern as I go so it will fit an infant size 7ish foot. once I have finished the first one I'll put the adapted pattern up here.

Here is some hand spun that I did not spin, but I dyed the roving! My friend Minnie spun it for me because I have a hard time getting any spinning done, let alone spinning fingering weight.
She made singles of the Viole(n)t and (B)Limey rovings, then plied them together.

This is the stuff that I spun, the first picture is some silk caps that I bought on my honeymoon(5 years ago). It was spun on a hand spindle then Navajo plied. The second photo is some tussah silk that I dyed they are each about 4oz the yellow and blue ones on the right I spun sometime before Babygurl was born, the green and purple were spun the Monday after Lillies while Babygurl was at Tante Yaya's house. I'll be knitting some Christmas stockings for us out of it, but probably wont get them done this year.

My garden is doing great! The cabbages are cabbageing, and the tomatoes are tomating, hopefully my tomatoes will get ripe this year. Last year they were still green when the frost hit.

The trip we took to visit grandma & grandpa's farm in the beginning of June? I think. Babygurl got to help feed the baby goats and she got to hold a baby kittie. She was really good with the kitten she didn't try to squeeze it or anything, she did give it lots of kisses.

I just got back to normal life after 10 days camping at an SCA Event called Lillies war. we had a blast it was a bit hot in the afternoons but we all survived. I have gotten the dishes and most of the laundry done, haven't unpacked the camera, so no pictures yet. Now I just have to survive the Midwest weavers conference and not having the babygurl for the week.

Ever since May started it just seems like there is less time in the day even though it's daylight savings time. I've been dyeing some self stripeing yarns and some fibers, going on road trips, trying to get ready for a week long camping event, and gardening! OK, so I got flickr as you will notice it's on the sidebar now. I've put up some of the pics that are in previous posts so you can see them better. I'm still working on uploading the others, but I'm getting tired and must watch the Gray's Anatomy 2 hour special tonight!

Warped

The warping board is finished, and has been warped! I used bolts instead of the metal rods because I didn't want to cut the rods, but I think I need to cut the tops off of the bolts on the single side so I can get the yarn off easier. The tops have to stay on the double side so I can get them in and out still.

Now I hope I wound the yarn correctly. I guess I'll find out after I dye it and knit a swatch. :)

I dyed some more angelina fiber along with some other yarns, they turned out much better than the first one. Maybe the heat setting was all it needed.

These are actually the colors they are supposed to be. :)

Apparently blogger won't let me put any more pictures in this post, so tomorrow I am going to learn how to use flicker. I will give the details of the rest of my dyeing then.

Building stuff & Knitting

Last weekend Babygurl and I went out of town for an SCA event, and to visit family in Vermillion SD. It was small but fun. Did I remember the camera? yes! did I take pictures? no, I forgot. I did get one pic of Babygurl and grandma though.

She got to play with the kitties, the new dog, and the bunnies, she even mooed at the cows. I finished the flamingo blanket, and worked on my sock. Between the weekend and Thursday night knitting I got a lot more done!

The heel has been turned and I am now working on the gussets.

Tuesday I went over to Violet's to skein yarn. I got all but 5 pounds done. I still need to find time to dye it all up.

Wednesday I bought all the supplies to make a warping board to make self striping sock yarn. On Thursday I drilled the holes and installed the hardware, yesterday I stained it now I just need to do a coat of polyurethane then...self striping yarn! (assuming I can figure out the warping instructions. ) There will be pictures when it's done.

The rest of yesterday was spent doing laundry, and yard work. I got my tomatoes planted, so I will have delicious home grown ones instead of the unripe city tomatoes the stores try to pass of as good. I still have to plant my peas, and mow the lawn. As soon as Babygurl goes down for a nap, it's yard work time, then maybe I can get more dyeing done.

On Monday babygurl decided to take a couple of face plants into stuff (table, ground, things like that) so now her face is all scraped up. It didn't seem to bother her much, and she was back to being silly in no time.

Hello, Dahling!

I managed to get two more batches of dyeing done before I had to go pick Tattoo Husband up from the airport.

It's supposed to be green and purple, but the green turned out a little more bluey than I wanted. I also dyed a sample of some angelina fiber yesterday, just to see what would happen. The color used was copenhagen blue, I was amazed at the results! You will be too!

This is NOT blue! WTF?!!!

It's still pretty though.

I'm gonna have to try dyeing more of this stuff with other methods and see what I come up with. :)

I got some more roving listed on etsy and hopefully soon more sock yarn and all of the cotton and linen I've done.

Today is S&B night Yay! I get to either work on my sock, or the blanket I can't decide. I'm not allowing myself to work on any new projects until the blanket is done, so maybe that. I guess it will be a surprise!

Thanks to my friend Violet, who let me use her spiffy new electric skein winder yesterday, I have 2 more batches of yarn dyed! today I did red and blue.

Some unknown person dumped a bunch of branches in my alley last saturday while we were gone, so I trimmed one up and hung yarn on it, see the yarn trees really are blooming!

Yesterday was pretty busy, my husband went to a tattoo convention in Seattle, WA. His flight was at 11:57 am but, we got there and it had been cancelled. He talked to the ticket people and got onto a flight at 2:45. Then I dropped babygurl of at the sitter's, and went to the LYS, where I run the S&B from 5pm to 8pm. I got to work on my other sock!

The first sock finished, with the 2nd sock started, Babygurl in her jammies and mom's sock.

It's been awhile since I worked on my socks, I almost forgot where I was in the pattern, luckily Jaywalkers are easy. :)

Today when we got up I decided to do some dyeing. I got every thing ready, had lunch, and then nap time!!!!

Dyepots on the stove

This isn't how I usually dye stuff, I like hand painting a lot more, but I've had a few requests for more solid colors. Usually when I do immersion dyeing the yarn gets tangled, so I put more ties on the skeins this time. Hopefully the color will turn out somewhat even too.

I did a batch of yellow and a batch of orange each is 1lb. of cotton and 1/2lb of linen.

It has been cold here for about a week, and wet all day, it sucks! All munchkin wants to do is go outside, she's been a little monster cause she can't.

I did get to work on one of my projects a bit last night. It's a blanket for a friends granddaughter, I'm crocheting around the edge. It's almost done only 2 sides left! yay!

Survived Kansas

We went to Lawrence, KS to visit friends for Easter. We left Fri. evening and stayed with friends who live about 45 min. outside of Lawrence, got lost getting there because of construction, and no knitting in the car because it was dark. We arrived about 2am chatted for a bit and went to bed.

Sat. morning I woke up with a headache which progressed into a full blown migraine, no knitting then either. I had wanted to go to the Yarn Barn, but not with a migraine. Finally felt better about 8 pm so I could at least be social for a bit.

Sunday we got up and let the kids play(they have an 18mo old son), they had so much fun! we finally left about 5pm, and decided to stop by another friends house, got lost finding it too. I hate rural Kansas, their road signs make no sense! got there at 7 stayed for an hour, then left to go home. by the time we got to a road that we knew it was dark. no knitting.

The countryside was pretty, and we got to see a lot of scenery, and visit with friends we don't get to see enough, so most of the weekend was pretty good. But no knitting :(

After months and months of prodding by friends who have blogs I finally sat down and got it together. I don't know how together it is, but here goes......
